Agricultural film recycling challenges — why specialist machinery is needed

Agricultural plastic film is primarily LDPE or LLDPE (mulch film and greenhouse film) and LDPE or LLDPE/HDPE blends (silage stretch film). The key challenges that make agricultural film more difficult to recycle than industrial or packaging film are: high soil and sand content — mulch film used in the soil can carry 30–60% contamination by weight; wet and degraded condition — outdoor-weathered film is UV-degraded and brittle, generating more fines during size reduction; tangling — film pieces are long and prone to wrapping; very low bulk density — even after shredding, agricultural film flake is extremely light and difficult to convey and process in equipment designed for rigid plastic. Agricultural film recycling lines address these challenges through: a pre-cleaning trommel or drum washer to remove loose soil before size reduction; a wet granulator or film-specific shredder for size reduction in water; multiple friction washing stages with high water volumes; a float-tank for density separation; high-capacity centrifugal dewatering; thermal drying; and a pelletising extruder with a fine melt filtration system to remove residual mineral contamination.
