Plastic buckets are produced by injection moulding — thermoplastic granules (typically polypropylene or HDPE) are melted, injected into a mould at high pressure, cooled, and ejected as a finished or near-finished bucket. The mould determines the bucket's dimensions, wall thickness, stacking geometry, handle lug positions, and surface finish. For production of 5–25 litre buckets, machine clamping forces typically range from 300 to 800 tonnes depending on the bucket diameter and wall thickness. A production cell consists of the injection moulding machine, the bucket mould (typically a single-cavity or 2-cavity hot runner tool), an IML (in-mould labelling) unit if labelled buckets are required, and a robot/conveyor for part removal and stacking. Cycle times for a standard 5-litre PP bucket (wall thickness approximately 2.5mm) are typically 8–16 seconds. Output per hour ranges from approximately 180–450 buckets per hour per cavity depending on material, wall thickness, and cooling efficiency.
Mould compatibility, materials, and output specifications
When specifying a bucket making machine, the mould is as critical as the machine itself. Key mould specifications: number of cavities (single or 2-cavity for standard production; some high-speed 5L setups run 4-cavity); hot runner vs cold runner (hot runners eliminate sprue waste and reduce cycle time but cost more); mould steel grade (P20 for standard production; H13 or hardened steel for higher-volume, longer life); cavity and core surface treatment; and tie bar spacing compatibility with the mould footprint. Material: polypropylene (PP homopolymer or block copolymer for impact resistance) is the standard for food-grade, paint, and general-purpose buckets. HDPE is used where greater chemical resistance or lower temperature flexibility is required — jerricans, chemical containers. Clarify the target material, as screw and barrel configuration may differ for PP vs HDPE at high throughput. For food-grade buckets (cooking oil, food products, drinking water), confirm the material and mould are food-contact approved and the machine is suitable for food-grade production.
