Each resin family has multiple grades differentiated by melt flow index (MFI), density, molecular weight distribution, and additive packages — and grade selection directly determines processing performance and end-product properties. Beyond commodity grades, specialty materials including engineering plastics (ABS, PC, nylon, acetal), biodegradable polymers (PLA, PBAT), and recycled-content resins (rPET, rHDPE, rPP) serve specific application requirements. China, the United States, South Korea, and the Middle East (SABIC, EQUATE, Borouge) are the primary resin export origins.

Before confirming a plastic raw material order, request the following documentation: a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) confirming MFI, density, tensile strength, and relevant property values for the grade; the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS); REACH compliance declaration for EU-destined material, confirming the absence of SVHCs above 0.1% by weight; food contact Declaration of Compliance where required (EU Regulation 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR); and origin documentation (Certificate of Origin, packing list, commercial invoice). For recycled-content resins, also request the input material declaration, contamination testing data, and Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification if recycled content claims are required for your market. Verify the supplier's ISO 9001 certification and, for food or medical applications, additional sector-specific certifications. Payment terms for commodity resin are typically open account (for established buyers) or Letter of Credit for new supplier relationships.

Thermoplastic resins are supplied in three main packaging formats: 25kg bags (paper or woven PP), big bags (jumbo bags / FIBC, typically 500–1,000kg), and bulk tanker or railcar (for very high volume, typically 20+ tonnes per delivery). For container-load imports, most suppliers require one FCL as the minimum order — a 20ft container holds approximately 20–25 metric tonnes of granules depending on bulk density. For smaller B2B orders below FCL volume, some trading companies and distributors offer LCL options at a higher unit price. For recycled grades and specialty compounds, MOQs may be lower — particularly for compounders producing to order.
