What is the difference between a single-screw and a twin-screw snack extruder?
A single-screw extruder uses one rotating screw inside a barrel to convey, compress, and cook material before forcing it through a die. It is well-suited to simple corn-based expanded snacks and is lower in capital cost and mechanical complexity. A twin-screw extruder uses two intermeshing screws and offers significantly more flexibility: it can process a wider range of raw materials (including high-moisture, high-fat, and high-sugar formulations), produce a wider variety of textures and shapes, and has better mixing performance. Twin-screw extruders are preferred for co-extruded filled snacks, textured vegetable protein, breakfast cereals, and products requiring precise control over shear and temperature.
Can the same line produce multiple snack products?
Many snack lines can produce multiple products through die changes, seasoning changes, and formulation adjustments, but changeover time and cleaning requirements vary significantly. Extruder die changes typically take 15–60 minutes. Switching from a fried product to a baked product on a shared line requires a thorough clean-down. Switching seasoning flavours requires a purge of the seasoning drum. When evaluating a multi-product line, ask the supplier for the changeover procedure and time for each product switch you anticipate, and confirm that the line speed and throughput are acceptable for each product.
What multihead weigher specification do I need for snack packaging?
