After drying, tea must be sorted and graded to produce the commercially specified leaf grades required by buyers and the bulk tea market. Tea sorting equipment includes: vibrating flat screens and rotary screens (sort by particle size — separating larger leaf grades from finer grades, dust, and broken particles); fibre extractors (remove light stem fibres and stalks from the tea — fibre reduces quality and is penalised in grading); stalk extractors (specifically target the coarser, denser stalks that remain after rolling and firing — their presence reduces the quality grade); optical colour sorters (inspect individual tea particles by colour and reflectance, detecting and removing off-colour particles — pale yellow particles from unfermented material, black particles from burnt leaf, or foreign material; standard in premium orthodox tea grading and in specialty or export-grade CTC tea); and dust and fine sifters (remove the finest particles below the minimum marketable size — the tea dust and fanning grades are separately packed for specific markets including mass-market tea bags).
