Coffee packaging must protect freshly roasted beans from the two main deterioration mechanisms — oxygen ingress (causing flavour oxidation) and moisture ingress (causing staling and clumping for ground coffee). The standard barrier laminate for roasted coffee bags is PET/AL foil/PE or BOPP/AL foil/PE — the aluminium foil layer delivering near-zero oxygen transmission rate (OTR) to protect flavour compounds during shelf life. A one-way degassing valve is a critical component for freshly roasted coffee: roasted beans and grounds continue to release CO₂ for days or weeks after roasting, and the valve allows this CO₂ to escape without allowing oxygen to enter. Valves are typically thermally welded into the front or back panel of the bag before filling. The main coffee bag formats are flat-bottom (block bottom) bags — offering the widest shelf footprint and maximum printable surface, preferred for premium single-origin and specialty coffee brands; side-gusset stand-up pouches — the cost-effective workhorse format for mainstream and private-label coffee; pillow pouches — a simple three-seal bag used for budget commodity coffee and filter papers. Resealable zipper closures — press-to-close or slider zippers — are standard for retail coffee bags to maintain freshness after opening. Tin-tie closures (fold-and-press metal wire strips along the top seal) are available as a craft-aesthetic alternative to zippers for specialty coffee.
