A case packer (also called a case-packing machine or case-erect-and-pack system) loads groups of primary-packed products into corrugated cardboard shipping cases (RSC cases, wrap-around cases, or display-ready cases) for distribution. The case packer is the key end-of-line machine between the primary packaging line and the palletiser. Case packing methods: drop packing (top-load case packing) — products are grouped into the required count and pattern by a collating conveyor or robot; a pre-erected RSC case (regular slotted container) is positioned under the product group; the products are dropped or lowered into the open case from above; the case is then conveyed to the case sealer or case taper. Suitable for bottles, jars, cans, pouches, and cartons that are robust enough to handle the drop. Wrap-around case packing — a flat cardboard blank is wrapped around the product group; the blank is folded and glued into a tight-fitting case around the product; produces a tighter, lower-material-use pack than an RSC case; the standard for bottles (beer, water, soft drinks, edible oil) and cartons at high speed. Wrap-around cases can be produced at speeds of 30–120 cases per minute for beverages. Side-load case packing — products are pushed into the open end of a pre-erected RSC case horizontally; used for products that must maintain orientation (biscuits in nested stacks, tall bottles, spray cans) and cannot be dropped. Robotic case packing — a robot arm (SCARA, delta, or 6-axis) picks and places products into cases using a gripper, suction, or magnetic end-of-arm tool; highly flexible for different product shapes and case configurations; slower than fixed-format machines but ideal for operations with many product and case SKUs.
Case formats, speeds, and sourcing
The case format defines the type of corrugated shipping case used and affects machine selection. RSC (regular slotted container) — the standard four-flap corrugated case; pre-erected and then top-loaded or end-loaded; robust and widely available; standard for many grocery, industrial, and food service applications. Wrap-around case (wraparound blank) — a flat blank that is wrapped around the product group and glued; requires a wrap-around case packer; lower material use and tighter fit to the product group. Display-ready case (DRC, tray + lid) — the bottom of the case is designed to be placed directly on a pallet or shelf as a retail display; top portion tears off for shelf placement; requires a specialised case packer or tray packer. HSC (half-slotted container) — a case with flaps on one end only; used for stacked products where the case is open on top for retail display. Case sealing: after packing, RSC cases are sealed by a case taper (applies pressure-sensitive tape) or a case gluer (applies hot-melt adhesive to the flaps). Wrap-around cases are glued by the case packer's own gluing station. Output speed ranges: for small-scale operations, 5–15 cases per minute is standard; for food and beverage production lines, 20–80+ cases per minute; for high-speed beverage wrap-around lines, 80–150+ cases per minute. Key suppliers: Tetra Pak (beverage), KHS, Krones (beverage and food), Cama, OCME, Smi Group, a large number of Chinese case packer manufacturers. When sourcing, specify: product type and dimensions, case format, case dimensions and count configuration (e.g. 6×2×1 for 12 units), required output speed, upstream integration, and whether a robotic or fixed-format solution is preferred.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a case packer and a cartoner?
A cartoner fills individual retail consumer cartons (folding boxboard cartons) with primary-packed or loose products — these are the boxes seen on supermarket shelves. A case packer fills shipping corrugated cases with already-packed consumer units (bottles, cartons, pouches) for distribution. In a typical packaging line: the primary packing machine fills the product → the cartoner puts individual units into retail cartons → the case packer puts multiple cartons into a corrugated shipping case → the palletiser stacks shipping cases on a pallet. Some case packers handle primary-packed products directly (without cartons) — particularly in beverage production where bottles go directly from the labeller into a corrugated case or tray.
How do I select the right case count configuration?
The case count configuration (e.g. 12, 24, 36 units per case) is driven by: the retail or wholesale ordering unit (the number of units per case determines how buyers order); logistics and pallet configuration (the case must stack efficiently on a standard pallet without overhang or instability); weight limits for manual handling (cases over 15–20kg require mechanical handling aids or roller-bottom cases); retail display requirements (display-ready cases must be the correct multiple of shelf facings). The case packing machine must be able to handle the chosen configuration and ideally should allow format change for different configurations on the same line.
Can a wrap-around case packer handle bottles of different sizes?
Wrap-around case packers can be designed to handle multiple bottle sizes with format changeover — changing the guide rails, grip fingers, folding geometry, and glue head positions. However, the cardboard blank dimensions must also change to match each bottle size, so the blank infeed magazine must also be configured for each format. For operations with frequent format changes, a servo-driven wrap-around machine with electronic format recall reduces changeover time from hours to minutes. For widely differing bottle heights and diameters, multiple machines or a robotic solution may be more practical.
