China is the world's largest consumer of edible vegetable oil, accounting for approximately 30 million tonnes annually. Soybean oil is the most consumed oil (approximately 40% of total consumption), followed by palm oil (approximately 20%), rapeseed oil (approximately 17%), peanut oil, cottonseed oil, and sunflower oil. The majority of soybean oil consumed in China comes from domestic crushing of imported soybeans — China imports approximately 100 million tonnes of soybeans annually, predominantly from Brazil (approximately 65%) and the USA (approximately 25%), crushed by domestic processors in major port cities (Tianjin, Dalian, Qingdao, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang). Palm oil is imported in refined, bleached, and deodorised (RBD) form primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia. The dominant edible oil companies in China are COFCO (state-owned, controlling major brands including Fortune/Fulinmen) and Wilmar International (operating through its China subsidiary, owning the Arawana/Jinlongyu brand — China's top-selling cooking oil brand). Foreign suppliers seeking to export food products (including cooking oil) to China must obtain GACC (General Administration of Customs of China) facility registration. This is administered under GACC Order No. 248 and is a pre-requisite for any food product entering China.
