Filtration is required at multiple stages in edible oil processing to separate solids (seed fines, bleaching earth, catalyst residues, wax crystals) from the oil phase. Different filtration technologies are suited to different stages, oil types, and particle characteristics. **Plate-and-frame filter press (also called chamber filter press):** The most widely used filtration equipment in small-to-medium scale edible oil production. Consists of a series of rectangular filter plates and frames clamped together — oil flows through filter cloth on each plate surface, leaving solids behind in the cake space between frames. When the cake is full, the press is opened and the filter cake is removed manually or mechanically. Advantages: simple, reliable, low cost, handles a wide range of oil types and cake characteristics. Disadvantages: batch process requiring manual cake discharge; relatively labour-intensive for high-throughput operations. Applications: crude oil clarification after pressing (removing seed fines), post-bleaching earth filtration, crude palm oil filtration. **Pressure leaf filter (also called vertical or horizontal leaf filter):** A continuous or semi-continuous pressure vessel containing multiple filter leaves (flat perforated tubes covered in filter cloth or wire mesh). Oil is pumped into the vessel under pressure; it passes through the filter medium and out through the leaves, leaving solids as a cake on the leaf surface. When the cake is full, the vessel is discharged (by vibration or sluice). Advantages: higher throughput per unit footprint than plate-and-frame; faster cycle; automated discharge possible. Widely used in medium-to-large refinery bleaching operations and fractionation. **Membrane filter press:** A variant of the plate-and-frame press where inflatable membrane plates squeeze the filter cake under pressure after initial filtration — reducing residual oil in the cake and improving filtration efficiency. Critical application: **edible oil fractionation** — membrane filter presses are the industry standard for palm oil fractionation, separating palm olein from palm stearin with low olein content in the stearin fraction (high fractionation efficiency). **Polishing filter (candle filter / bag filter):** Used for final product clarity — removes last traces of solids and turbidity from refined oil before bottling. Candle filters (small cartridge tubes) and bag filters (felt bag elements) are the two main types. Low-cost and simple; filter elements are replaced when blinded.
