HDPE pipe resins are classified by minimum required strength (MRS) at 20°C over a 50-year service life, tested in accordance with ISO 9080. PE100 (MRS 10 MPa) is the current benchmark for pressure pipe applications — it offers the highest pressure rating per wall thickness, the best resistance to slow crack growth (SCG), and is the dominant grade for potable water mains, gas distribution networks, and industrial pressure pipework. PE80 (MRS 8 MPa) is an earlier generation grade with lower pressure capacity — still used in lower-pressure agricultural irrigation and drainage applications, but largely superseded by PE100 for new pressure pipe installations. PE63 is a lower-performance grade used for non-pressure drainage and cable ducting. For modern pressure pipe manufacturing, specify PE100 as the default unless the application specifically allows PE80. PE100-RC (resistance to crack) grades add enhanced slow crack growth and rapid crack propagation resistance — required for relining and trenchless installation techniques where the pipe must survive installation stresses. Density for pipe-grade HDPE is typically 0.946–0.960 g/cm³. MFI for pipe extrusion is low — typically 0.1–1.5 g/10 min at 190°C/5 kg — because high molecular weight and low MFI are needed for the long-term pressure resistance that defines PE100.
