Understanding the full process chain is essential when specifying palm oil processing machinery. **Stage 1: Fresh fruit bunch (FFB) reception and weighing** FFB arriving from the plantation are weighed on a weighbridge and transferred to the steriliser loading bay. Speed of processing from harvest to sterilisation is critical — delayed processing causes FFA to rise in the CPO (reducing quality and price). The weighbridge and FFB ramp infrastructure are the first investments in a new palm oil mill. **Stage 2: Sterilisation** FFB is loaded into horizontal cylindrical sterilisers (autoclaves) and treated with high-pressure steam (about 3 bar, 140°C) in a controlled cycle. Sterilisation: deactivates lipase enzyme in the fruit (preventing further FFA development), loosens the fruit from the bunch, and softens the mesocarp to aid subsequent oil extraction. Batch sterilisers are standard for small-to-medium mills (5–30 MT FFB/hour); continuous sterilisers are used in large mills (60+ MT FFB/hour). **Stage 3: Threshing (stripping)** Sterilised bunches are fed into a rotating drum thresher that separates the individual fruitlets from the empty fruit bunch (EFB). The EFB is discharged as a by-product (used as mulch or energy biomass); the fruitlets proceed to digestion. Rotary drum threshers are the standard equipment at this stage. **Stage 4: Digestion** Loose fruitlets are heated and macerated in a vertical cylinder digester with rotating beater arms — breaking down the mesocarp cells to release oil. The digester temperature is maintained at approximately 90–95°C using steam injection. Effective digestion is critical for high oil extraction efficiency in the subsequent press stage. **Stage 5: Oil extraction (pressing)** Digested material is fed into twin-screw continuous presses (the central piece of palm oil mill equipment) that squeeze oil and water from the mesocarp fibre. The oil-water mixture (press liquor) goes to clarification; the press cake (fibre + nuts) goes to fibre/nut separation. Twin-screw presses for palm milling are specifically designed for the fibrous, wet nature of digested palm — different from standard dry oilseed expeller presses. **Stage 6: Clarification and purification** The press liquor (oil + water + fine solids) is processed through settling/clarification tanks, centrifuges (continuous desludgers), and final purification centrifuges to separate crude palm oil from water and fine solids.
