Steel drums (also called steel barrels or metal drums) are the dominant bulk liquid and solid packaging format in the 50L–220L range — used for edible oils, lubricants, industrial chemicals, paints, coatings, agrochemicals, and food ingredients. The two primary drum types are closed-head drums and open-head drums. Closed-head drums (UN 1A1 for steel) have a fixed bottom and a bung-lid top — the top is not removable, and the contents are filled and emptied through bung openings (typically two bungs: a large 2-inch bung for filling and venting, and a small ¾-inch or 2-inch secondary bung). Closed-head drums are the standard for liquids — edible oil, chemical liquids, and lubricants. Open-head drums (UN 1A2 for steel) have a removable top secured by a bolt-on or lever-ring closure — providing full top access for solids, viscous products, and products that require spatula or scoop access (waxes, greases, tallow, solid fats, powders). The 200L drum is the near-universal standard for liquid transport by sea (one 20ft container holds approximately 80 × 200L drums). The 220L drum is the standard for some US and Canadian markets. Smaller sizes (50L, 100L) are used where full 200L drums would exceed weight limits or where smaller batch sizes are needed. Interior lining is critical: unlined steel drums are suitable only for products that do not react with steel; phenolic-epoxy lining is the standard for most chemical applications; food-grade lacquer or enamel lining is required for direct food contact (edible oil, food ingredients); zinc phosphate pre-treatment plus epoxy provides maximum corrosion resistance.
