PET stretch blow moulding (SBM) is the process used to produce the clear bottles found in water, CSD, juice, edible oil, and personal care packaging. A pre-made injection-moulded preform is reheated and simultaneously stretched axially (by a stretch rod) and blown into a mould with compressed air — this biaxial orientation gives PET bottles their clarity, strength, and carbonation retention. SBM machines are specified by number of cavities (1 to 20+ cavities per machine) and output per hour (typically 1,500–4,000 bottles per hour per cavity for standard sizes). Linear SBM machines (suitable for a wide range of bottle sizes and for smaller production runs) and rotary SBM machines (high-speed, best for single bottle size in high volume) are both available. HDPE extrusion blow moulding (EBM) produces bottles by extruding a hollow tube of molten HDPE (a parison), clamping a mould around it, and inflating the parison with air. EBM is used for HDPE shampoo bottles, household chemical bottles, jerricans (5–25L), fuel tanks, and industrial containers. EBM machines are characterised by the number of heads (parisons), shuttle or rotary design, and maximum container volume. For containers above approximately 5 litres, EBM is generally the preferred process. For PET containers up to approximately 5L, SBM is dominant.
