Meal portioning machines accurately portion solid food components (cooked rice, pasta, potato, vegetable pieces, meat portions) into meal trays. The main portioning technologies include: linear weighers (a single belt or vibratory feed system deposits product onto a weigher and delivers a target weight — suitable for larger portion sizes and products that cannot be multi-head weighed); multi-head weighers (multiple independent weigher heads are loaded simultaneously; the computer selects the combination of head weights closest to the target weight — extremely accurate and fast for small to medium piece-size products like vegetables, pasta, or diced potato; commonly 10–14 heads, producing portions within ±1–3g of the target); and volumetric portioners (a defined volume of product is dispensed per portion — less accurate by weight but suitable for consistent-density products). For solid protein components (meat portions, fish fillets), individual piece weighing and manual or robotic placement into the meal tray is typical, as pieces are too irregular for automated volumetric or multi-head portioning.
