Oilseed preparation (also called seed conditioning and size reduction) is the stage between seed cleaning and oil extraction. Proper seed preparation is critical for maximising oil extraction efficiency and producing quality meal. Key preparation steps include: cracking or breaking (reducing the whole seed to smaller pieces to facilitate heat and moisture penetration in conditioning — typically using corrugated cracking rolls); conditioning (heating the cracked seeds with steam to soften the cell walls, adjust moisture content, and deactivate undesirable enzymes — improves oil release during pressing and extraction); and flaking (passing conditioned seed through smooth, high-compression flaking rolls to create thin flakes, typically 0.25–0.40mm thick, that maximise the surface area for oil drainage during extraction or pressing). For soybeans: after flaking, the flakes are fed directly to the solvent extractor. For sunflower and rapeseed: flakes may be pressed in a pre-press expeller before extraction to reduce the oil content in the flake entering the extractor.

Thicker flakes have lower surface area per unit weight, reducing the rate of oil extraction and requiring longer contact times in the extractor. Very thin flakes that break into powder ('fines') can block the extractor conveyor and cause channelling, reducing extraction efficiency.
