Vibratory feeders for food — types and applications

Vibratory feeders move and control the flow of granular, powder, and small piece food products using controlled vibration. The vibration causes the product to advance along the feeder trough or bowl in a controlled, consistent flow rate. Food-grade vibratory feeder types include: linear vibratory feeders (a flat or channel-section trough vibrated by an electromagnetic drive or mechanical eccentric — for product spreading before a belt dryer or conveyor; for uniform distribution onto processing equipment; and for controlled feed rate metering); bowl feeders (a bowl vibrated to move product spirally upward along the inside — primarily used for orientation and singulation of small food pieces for inspection or counting); and vibrating conveyor screens (combining conveying and sieving in one unit). Vibratory feeders are preferred over belt conveyors for certain applications because they have no belt, simple flat stainless steel surfaces, and are easy to clean — they are particularly suitable for dry products, products that would stick to a belt, or applications where the feeder must be completely cleanable.
