A case packer (also called a case-packing machine or case-erect-and-pack system) loads groups of primary-packed products into corrugated cardboard shipping cases (RSC cases, wrap-around cases, or display-ready cases) for distribution. The case packer is the key end-of-line machine between the primary packaging line and the palletiser. Case packing methods: drop packing (top-load case packing) — products are grouped into the required count and pattern by a collating conveyor or robot; a pre-erected RSC case (regular slotted container) is positioned under the product group; the products are dropped or lowered into the open case from above; the case is then conveyed to the case sealer or case taper. Suitable for bottles, jars, cans, pouches, and cartons that are robust enough to handle the drop. Wrap-around case packing — a flat cardboard blank is wrapped around the product group; the blank is folded and glued into a tight-fitting case around the product; produces a tighter, lower-material-use pack than an RSC case; the standard for bottles (beer, water, soft drinks, edible oil) and cartons at high speed. Wrap-around cases can be produced at speeds of 30–120 cases per minute for beverages. Side-load case packing — products are pushed into the open end of a pre-erected RSC case horizontally; used for products that must maintain orientation (biscuits in nested stacks, tall bottles, spray cans) and cannot be dropped. Robotic case packing — a robot arm (SCARA, delta, or 6-axis) picks and places products into cases using a gripper, suction, or magnetic end-of-arm tool; highly flexible for different product shapes and case configurations; slower than fixed-format machines but ideal for operations with many product and case SKUs.
