How VFFS machines work and what they produce

A VFFS (vertical form fill seal) machine forms bags from a flat film roll, fills them with product, and seals and cuts them — entirely automatically. The VFFS process: flat film from a roll is fed over a forming shoulder that wraps it into a tube around a vertical fill tube; a longitudinal fin seal or lap seal joins the film edges to form a continuous tube; a cross-sealing jaw creates the bottom seal of the next bag while simultaneously creating the top seal of the previous bag and cutting the bags apart; product is dispensed through the fill tube (open at the top) into the bag cavity before the cross seal closes. The result is a filled and sealed bag produced at high speed from a roll of flat film. VFFS machines produce a wide range of bag styles: pillow pouch — the standard flat-sided bag; gusset bag — a bag with side gussets for better stability; block-bottom bag — a bag with a flat bottom that stands upright; quad-seal bag — a bag with four vertical seals and a flat bottom, used for premium coffee and pet food. VFFS machines are used across a wide range of applications: snacks (crisps, popcorn, puffed snacks) — typically with a multihead weigher above; nuts, seeds, dried fruit — multihead weigher; frozen vegetables and frozen food portions — multihead weigher or linear weigher; ground coffee and whole bean coffee — auger filler or linear weigher; powders (flour, spices, protein powder, dry chemicals) — auger filler or volumetric cup filler; liquids and pastes (sauces, dairy products) — piston or pump filler; granular products (sugar, rice, pulses) — cup filler or multihead weigher; sachets (single-serve portions of sugar, tea, spices) — auger filler in multi-lane configurations.
