The main jar formats and their standard applications are: twist-off (TO) jars — the standard for preserved foods (jams, pickles, olives, sauces, condiments), the metal lid incorporates a sealing compound and the twist-off mechanism; lug cap jars — similar to twist-off but the lug caps engage with lugs on the neck ring rather than continuous threads, enabling faster application and removal, standard for canned tomatoes, fruit preserves, and sauces; wide-mouth preserving jars (Mason jar profile) — popular for craft preserving, artisan food products, and premium retail positioning; cosmetic jars (standard profile for creams, balms, body butters) — typically 30ml–500ml, available in clear, amber, and opaque glass; pharmaceutical jars — for tablets, capsules, and medicinal preparations.
