Sunflower oil production — specific process considerations

Sunflower oil processing has specific requirements that differ from other oilseed crops. Seed cleaning is essential before any processing — sunflower seeds harvested at scale carry significant quantities of leaf fragments, stems, and soil. Dehulling removes the shell from the seed kernel before pressing or extraction. Sunflower seeds are typically 20–30% hull by weight; the hull contains wax and non-oil material that increases wax content of the crude oil and reduces extraction efficiency if not removed. Dehulled seeds (or partially dehulled with kernel-hull separation) give cleaner crude oil and better press performance. Cold-pressed sunflower oil retains natural tocopherols (vitamin E) and is marketed as a premium product. Hot-pressed and solvent-extracted crude sunflower oil requires full RBD refining including a dewaxing stage to remove waxes that otherwise cloud the finished oil at refrigeration temperature. Dewaxing by winterisation (controlled cooling and filtration) is an additional stage in the sunflower oil refinery.
