Refining crude vegetable oil involves a series of processing stages, each targeting specific impurities. Degumming removes phospholipids (gums) using water or acid treatment; centrifuges separate the hydrated gums. Neutralisation (also called caustic refining or alkali refining) reacts the oil with sodium hydroxide solution to convert free fatty acids (FFA) into soaps, which are then separated by centrifuge and washed out. Bleaching adsorbs colour bodies, trace metals, and oxidation products using activated bleaching earth; the spent earth is filtered out through a pressure leaf filter. Deodorisation (deodourisation) is a steam distillation process at high temperature (200–250°C) and high vacuum that removes volatile off-flavour compounds, residual FFA, and pesticide residues. After deodorisation the oil is cooled, filtered, and transferred to storage. Some oils — particularly palm oil — also require fractionation (controlled crystallisation and filtration) to separate liquid olein from solid stearin.
Batch versus continuous refinery
Edible oil refineries are available as batch systems or continuous systems. Batch refineries process the oil in discrete batches through each refining stage. They have lower capital cost, are more flexible for processing multiple oil types, and are suitable for capacities typically up to around 30–50 tonnes per day. Continuous refineries process oil in a steady-state flow through all stages simultaneously. They offer higher throughput, lower processing costs per tonne, more consistent oil quality, and lower chemical and steam consumption per unit, but require a higher minimum operating scale (typically 100+ tonnes per day) to be economical. For a buyer establishing a small-to-medium oil refinery, a batch system is usually the right starting point. For a large-scale commercial oil refinery, a continuous system will have a lower long-run cost.
Buyer guidance for edible oil refinery plants
Before requesting a quotation, specify: (1) crude oil type (sunflower, soybean, palm, groundnut, corn, rapeseed, cottonseed, or other); (2) crude oil quality (FFA %, phosphorus content, colour, moisture) — this determines the refining difficulty and chemical consumption; (3) required refining capacity in tonnes of crude oil per day or per 24-hour shift; (4) batch or continuous refinery preference; (5) refining stages required (degumming only, partial refining, or full RBD to food-grade specification); (6) fractionation requirement (relevant for palm oil); (7) finished oil quality specification (FFA, colour, peroxide value, smoke point if known); (8) available utilities (steam at the correct pressure, electrical supply, cooling water, vacuum source, caustic and acid storage); (9) available floor area and building height (deodoriser columns can be 8–15 metres tall); (10) installation and commissioning support required. A crude oil analysis is strongly recommended before finalising your refinery specification — the chemical consumption and process design depend heavily on crude oil quality.

What is the oil loss in refining, and how does it affect my economics?
Refining loss is the percentage of oil lost during the refining process through saponification (soap formation) in neutralisation, oil entrained in spent bleaching earth, and distillation losses in deodorisation. Total refining loss for well-run plants typically ranges from 1.5% to 5% depending on crude oil quality (primarily FFA level) and the refining technology used. Higher FFA crude oil requires more caustic in neutralisation, producing more soap and higher oil loss. Physical refining (where neutralisation is replaced by FFA distillation in a combined deacidification-deodorisation step) can reduce refining losses for high-FFA oils. Ask your supplier to estimate refining loss for your specific crude oil quality.
Can one refinery process multiple oil types?
Many batch refineries can process multiple oil types through recipe changes in the neutralisation stage (different caustic concentration and temperature settings for different oils) and by adjusting bleaching earth dosage. Continuous refineries designed for one oil type can typically be retuned for other oils but may not achieve optimal performance on all types without equipment modification. If you intend to process multiple oil types, tell the supplier explicitly and ask them to confirm which oils the plant design is validated for, what procedure is required to switch between oils, and what minimum run length is practical per oil type before changeover.
