How auger filling machines work and which powders they suit

An auger filling machine (also called a screw filler or auger doser) doses powder by rotating a precisely manufactured helical screw inside a tube. Each rotation of the auger displaces a fixed volume of powder. The fill weight is controlled by the number of auger rotations per fill cycle, which is set and adjusted on the machine controller. Auger fillers are the standard technology for fine, cohesive, or difficult-to-handle powders that would not flow reliably through a volumetric cup filler or gravity chute. Suitable products include: wheat flour, corn flour, rice flour — free-flowing to slightly cohesive, medium bulk density, wide particle size variation; ground coffee, instant coffee, chicory — fine to medium particle, cohesive; dried milk powder, whey powder, infant formula — fine, aerated, hygroscopic; ground spices and blended spice mixes — fine, variable bulk density, often dusty; protein powder, collagen powder — fine, aerated; pharmaceutical powders and API blends — fine, controlled environment; dry chemical powders — range of densities and flow characteristics. Auger fillers are not well-suited to free-flowing granules (rice, seeds, nuts) where a multihead weigher or linear weigher will be more accurate and faster. The auger geometry — pitch, flight depth, and diameter — must be matched to the powder's bulk density and flowability. Replaceable auger inserts allow one machine to handle multiple products by swapping the auger and hopper cone.
