Wooden pallet types, standards, and ISPM 15 requirements
Wooden pallets are the global standard unit-load platform for warehouse storage, logistics, and freight transport — available in standard and custom sizes for a wide range of industry and distribution applications. Key wooden pallet types and standards: EUR/EPAL pallet (European standard) — the most widely used pallet in European logistics — 1,200mm × 800mm, three-runner construction with 78 × 22mm deck boards and standardised nail pattern; EPAL-licensed pallets carry the EPAL brand and are produced to a strict quality specification with independent audits. EPAL pallets are the standard for the European pallet pool system (EUR-pallets can be exchanged one-for-one between logistics operators). ISO pallet (1,200mm × 1,000mm) — the standard for most non-European global trade and for most ISO container-optimised unit loads. North American standard (48 × 40 inches / 1,219mm × 1,016mm) — the standard for the US, Canadian, and Latin American markets. Block pallets (four-way entry) — use corner blocks and middle blocks instead of runner boards, allowing four-way forklift entry; common in North America and Australia. Stringer pallets (two-way entry) — use three or four continuous runner boards; the dominant format in Europe and Asia. ISPM 15 (International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is the international standard requiring all wooden packaging material (pallets, crates, dunnage) used in international trade to be heat-treated (HT, 56°C at core for 30 minutes) or methyl bromide fumigated (MB) to prevent the international spread of wood-boring insects and pathogens. Pallets must be marked with the official ISPM 15 mark (the wheat-sheaf symbol with country code, producer code, and treatment code). ISPM 15 compliance is mandatory for export to virtually all major trading countries.
