Food metal detection systems — types and HACCP requirements
Metal contamination is one of the most common physical food safety hazards in commercial food production — metal fragments can enter the food from processing equipment (broken machine parts, wear debris from cutting blades, screens, and mixer components). Metal detection systems are a critical control point (CCP) in most food safety management systems (HACCP) required by BRC, IFS, SQF, and retailer codes of practice. Three main metal detector configurations are used in food processing: conveyor belt metal detectors (product passes on a belt through a metal detection aperture — standard for packaged product, portioned product, and bulk product on a belt); gravity-fall (free-fall) metal detectors (product falls vertically through a detection aperture — used for granular, powder, and loose product in bulk handling systems; typically installed before packaging); and pipeline metal detectors (liquid, semi-liquid, or pumped product flows through a detection coil in the pipe — used in dairy, sauce, and beverage production).
