Polyester: most widely used synthetic — high tenacity, wrinkle resistance, quick-dry; woven (taffeta, ripstop, twill) and knitted (jersey, interlock, mesh); denier 20D–600D. Nylon (polyamide): higher abrasion resistance and elasticity than polyester — outerwear, sportswear, swimwear; denier 20D–840D. Spandex (elastane/Lycra): 4-way stretch fibre blended at 2–20% with polyester or nylon for athletic and swimwear. Acrylic: wool-like handle, low cost — knitwear, blankets, upholstery. Microfibre: fibres <1 denier — ultrafine polyester or nylon for luxury-handle activewear, cleaning fabrics, suede-look.

Denier (D) = mass in grams per 9,000 metres of filament. Lower denier = finer yarn. dtex = grams per 10,000 metres (dtex = denier × 1.11). Typical deniers by application: 20–40D (lingerie, hosiery), 70–150D (sportswear, swimwear), 200–300D (outerwear shells, bags), 500–1000D (heavy workwear, luggage). Fabric weight (GSM) for performance wovens: 60–90 GSM (lightweight shell), 120–180 GSM (mid-layer), 200–300 GSM (heavy-duty outerwear).

Recycled polyester (rPET) is produced from post-consumer PET bottles or post-industrial polyester waste, reducing CO₂ by ~30–50% vs virgin polyester. GRS (Global Recycled Standard, by Textile Exchange) certifies the chain of custody from recycled input to finished fabric, requiring third-party auditing at each step. GRS fabric is now required by H&M, Nike, adidas, Patagonia, and many other brands. China (Zhejiang Hailide, Far Eastern New Century) and Taiwan are the largest rPET fabric exporters. MOQ: 300–500 metres per colour.

Performance synthetic fabrics use physical or chemical wicking mechanisms. Moisture-wicking jersey uses capillary action through hydrophilic fibre cross-section modifications (e.g. DuPont CoolMax — 4-channel polyester). Durable water repellency (DWR) finishes on woven shells repel water while maintaining breathability — tested to ISO 4920 (spray test). AATCC 195 measures liquid moisture management in fabrics. Wicking polyester is standard for athletic T-shirts at 100–160 GSM.
