Soybean oil is the second-largest traded vegetable oil globally and a staple of industrial food manufacturing. The USA, Brazil, and Argentina are the dominant producers and exporters, together accounting for more than 80% of global soybean oil trade. For wholesale buyers, the primary grade distinction is between crude degummed soybean oil (CDSO) — used by processors as a feedstock — and refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD) soybean oil, which is ready for food service and retail use. Non-GMO soybean oil commands a significant price premium and is increasingly demanded by European retailers and health-conscious food manufacturers. Organic soybean oil is a smaller but growing segment. Soybean oil is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly linoleic acid, and has a smoke point of approximately 230°C for refined grades. It is widely used as a base for margarine, salad dressings, mayonnaise, and as a general-purpose frying medium. Standard bulk packaging includes flexitanks, ISO tanks, and drums.
Key sourcing considerations for bulk soybean oil procurement
When sourcing soybean oil at scale, buyers should confirm the harvest origin (US identity-preserved crops command the highest non-GMO premiums), specify FFA content below 0.05% for refined grades, and request a full Certificate of Analysis covering peroxide value, moisture, colour, and stability tests. IP (identity preserved) documentation is required for non-GMO claims in the EU under EC No 1829/2003. For Halal markets, the pressing and refining process must comply — most refined soybean oil from Brazil and Argentina carries Halal certification as standard. Price benchmarks are typically tied to CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) soybean oil futures, so forward contracts are common for buyers locking in costs. Standard container MOQ is one FCL at approximately 22,000 litres flexitank.
