Single-head: for sampling and small production; 6–15 needles per head; table-top or floor-standing. Multi-head: 4–20+ heads for volume production; each head operates independently on the same frame; production rate scales linearly with head count. Flat embroidery: for flat fabric panels, t-shirts, bags, hats. Cap (tubular) embroidery: rotary hook mechanism for curved/3D items. Chenille and chain-stitch machines: for letterman jackets, varsity patches. Leading brands: Tajima (Japan), Barudan (Japan), ZSK (Germany), Happy Japan; Chinese brands (Feiya, Shengye) at 40–60% lower cost.
Digital Textile Printing Technologies
Reactive inkjet (for cotton and natural fibres): direct printing with reactive dyes requiring steaming and washing for fixation — highest colour accuracy and washfastness. Acid inkjet (for silk, wool, polyamide): acid dye printing with steam fixation. Disperse/sublimation inkjet (for polyester): dye-sublimation either direct-to-fabric or via transfer paper — vibrant, wash-fast, no water discharge. Pigment inkjet: direct-to-textile printing requiring only hot-air curing — growing rapidly for cotton; no water treatment but lower washfastness than reactive. DTG (Direct-to-Garment): pigment inkjet on pre-treated garment — ideal for short-run customisation.
Screen Printing vs Digital Printing
Screen printing: highest ink opacity and colour vibrancy; cost-effective for 500+ pieces per design; setup cost (screen making) makes short runs uneconomical; ideal for spot colours on T-shirts, athletic wear. Digital inkjet: no screen costs; economical for 1–200 pieces; full-photographic print quality; slower throughput than screen for high volumes. Sublimation: best for all-over polyester printing; extremely vibrant; not suitable for cotton. Most production facilities offer multiple technologies for different order sizes and substrate requirements.
