Vietnam's major export strengths are sportswear and activewear (Nike, Adidas, Under Armour all manufacture heavily in Vietnam), outerwear, cut-and-sew knitwear, and increasingly sophisticated woven garments. Vietnam's trade agreement access is a major competitive advantage: the EVFTA (EU-Vietnam FTA) provides 0-12% reduced duty rates on Vietnamese garments for EU buyers (versus 12% MFN for Chinese garments); the CPTPP provides preferential access to Canada, Australia, and Japan; and the US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement provides MFN access to the US market.
Vietnamese garment manufacturers generally operate at a higher price point than Bangladeshi factories but lower than Chinese factories — with a focus on quality execution of buyer-provided designs (CMT — cut, make, trim) or semi-FOB manufacturing. VITAS (Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association) membership is a useful quality indicator. Common certifications held by Vietnamese garment exporters include WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production), BSCI, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and SA8000. Full ODM capability is available from larger manufacturers. Rules of origin for EVFTA require double transformation (fabric must be woven in Vietnam or an ASEAN country with EU MRA, then cut and sewn in Vietnam) — fabric origin is therefore a critical consideration for EU tariff preference eligibility.

Does Vietnam have preferential duty access for garment exports to the EU?
Yes — under the EVFTA (EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement), Vietnamese garment exports to the EU benefit from reduced tariff rates compared to the standard 12% MFN duty applied to most garment imports. Tariff reductions are phased in over 7–10 years from the EVFTA's entry into force (August 2020). However, EVFTA rules of origin require double transformation — meaning the fabric used must itself be woven (not just the yarn) in Vietnam or an eligible ASEAN country, then cut and sewn in Vietnam. Importers should verify fabric origin documentation with their Vietnamese manufacturer to confirm EVFTA preferential treatment eligibility before claiming the reduced duty.
What garment categories does Vietnam specialise in?
Vietnam has particular manufacturing depth in sportswear and activewear (Nike, Adidas, Columbia, Under Armour have major production bases in Vietnam), outerwear (jackets, parkas, anoraks), cut-and-sew knitwear (sweaters, cardigans), woven shirts and blouses, and technical performance garments. Vietnam is generally less competitive than Bangladesh for basic high-volume commodity garments (plain t-shirts, basic polo shirts) where Bangladesh's lower labour costs and EBA duty-free EU access are dominant factors. For mid-range quality garments requiring more technical execution, Vietnam is frequently the preferred sourcing origin.
