A piston filler (also called a volumetric piston filler or positive-displacement piston filler) uses a reciprocating piston inside a cylinder to draw a measured volume of product from the supply tank and inject it into the container. On the intake stroke, the piston withdraws, drawing product from the supply hopper or tank through an inlet valve. On the fill stroke, the piston advances, closing the inlet valve and opening the outlet valve to force the measured volume of product into the container. Because fill volume is determined by the piston stroke length and cylinder diameter rather than by product flowability, piston fillers can handle the full viscosity range — from thin liquids to thick pastes — with high accuracy. Piston fillers are well-suited to: edible oils and cooking oils (light to medium viscosity); sauces and condiments (ketchup, hot sauce, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise — medium to high viscosity); creams and gels (body cream, face cream, hair gel, toothpaste); liquid soap, hand wash, shampoo, conditioner; honey and syrups; peanut butter, tahini, nut butters (high viscosity, requires heated or jacketed cylinder); pharmaceutical syrups and suspensions; cosmetic emulsions and lotions; chemical liquids (detergents, lubricants). For cooking oil filling specifically, piston fillers in food-grade 316 stainless steel are the most common technology on small to medium bottling lines, offering simple operation, easy cleaning, and good fill accuracy (±0.5–1% for oil).
