HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bottles are produced by extrusion blow moulding — where a tube of molten HDPE (parison) is extruded and then inflated inside a split mould to form the bottle shape. HDPE offers excellent chemical resistance, good ESCR (environmental stress crack resistance), low moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR), and is food-grade compliant in the appropriate resin grades. Common HDPE bottle applications are edible oil and cooking-oil (1L–5L), household cleaning products (detergents, bleach, disinfectants), personal care (shampoo, conditioner, body wash), industrial chemicals (where UN certification is required for hazardous goods), and milk and dairy (in markets using HDPE for single-use dairy packaging). HDPE bottles are typically white (natural HDPE), black, or custom colours — with pigments added to the HDPE melt during blow moulding. Unlike clear PET bottles, HDPE does not offer clarity (it is translucent to opaque) — where product visibility is required, PET or clear PP is a better choice. For food applications, HDPE resin must be food-contact approved and the manufacturer must provide a Declaration of Compliance under EU Regulation 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR. The HDPE raw material specification (melt flow index, density grade) affects bottle performance — request the specific resin grade from the supplier and cross-reference against the HDPE pipe-grade and film-grade sourcing guides if you need to understand material supply chain.
