A belt dryer is a continuous drying machine in which the product is spread on a slow-moving perforated or wire-mesh conveyor belt and passed through a heated drying tunnel. Hot air (typically heated by steam, gas burner, or electric heater) is blown through the mesh belt and the product layer, carrying away moisture. The moisture-laden air is exhausted while fresh dry air is heated and recirculated. Multi-stage belt dryers run two or three belts in cascade — the product drops from the first belt onto the second (and third), being turned and re-spread at each transition, ensuring more even drying than a single-pass belt. Belt dryers are preferred over tray dryers for continuous, high-throughput operations where the product can be spread on a belt without manual handling. Mesh belt dryers are suitable for products that: can be spread on a belt without forming a solid mat that blocks air penetration (diced or sliced vegetables and fruit, pasta, pet food, grain, legumes); maintain their shape during the drying process (do not liquify or become excessively sticky at drying temperature); and do not have very high initial moisture that would require excessive drying time or very long belt length. Products that are difficult on belt dryers include: products with very high initial moisture (>85%) where pre-draining or pre-drying is needed; sticky products that adhere to the belt; and very fine powders that fall through the mesh. For liquid or high-moisture products, spray drying or other drying technologies are more appropriate.
How does belt speed affect belt dryer output?
Belt speed controls the residence time of the product in the drying tunnel: a slow belt speed gives a longer drying time and produces drier product; a fast belt speed gives a shorter drying time and requires either a longer tunnel or produces product with higher final moisture. For a given product and drying temperature, the optimal belt speed for the target final moisture is determined during trials at commissioning. In production, belt speed is the primary control variable for adjusting the final moisture of the product — if the product exits too wet, slow the belt; if it exits too dry (over-dried), increase the belt speed. Operators should understand this relationship to avoid product waste from over-drying or quality failures from under-drying.
