Belt conveyors transport food products on a continuous belt driven by motorised rollers or pulleys. In food processing applications, the conveyor must meet food safety and hygienic design requirements: all product-contact surfaces and the conveyor frame must be stainless steel 304 or 316L (not painted steel or galvanised); the belt must be food-grade certified (food-grade PVC, polyurethane, or modular plastic belt — smooth or textured depending on the application); the conveyor must be designed for cleaning in place (CIP) or wash-down cleaning — open frame construction with no horizontal ledges, inaccessible hollow sections, or thread-on fixings where food and water can accumulate; the belt return run must be covered or easily accessible for cleaning; and bearings should be sealed stainless or plastic (to prevent contamination from lubricant and to resist water ingress during washing). For wet, moist, or sticky food products (fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, cooked food), the belt material selection is important to prevent product adhesion and allow effective cleaning.
