Shrink sleeve labels are pre-printed tubular film sleeves that are applied over a container and then shrunk tightly to the container profile by passing through a steam or hot-air shrink tunnel. The sleeve conforms to complex container shapes — including hourglass, tapered, and embossed profiles — enabling 360-degree print coverage that a self-adhesive label cannot achieve. The three primary shrink sleeve materials are PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified), and OPS (oriented polystyrene). PVC sleeves are the lowest-cost option with a high shrink ratio (up to 70% transverse direction), making them suitable for highly contoured containers; however, PVC is increasingly disfavoured for recyclability reasons as it contaminates PET container recycling streams and is not compatible with most European and US EPR scheme requirements. Print process, registration, and ordering guidance
Shrink sleeve labels are printed in reverse (inside) on the film surface before the sleeve is seamed into tubular form — protecting the ink layer from abrasion and product contact. Rotogravure printing is the standard process for high-volume shrink sleeves — delivering consistent colour across long runs and the fine detail and metallic effects demanded by premium beverage brands. Flexographic printing is used for shorter runs and less complex designs. When specifying shrink sleeves, provide: container shape and dimensions (including taper angle if applicable), sleeve material preference (PVC, PETG, OPS), vertical shrink range required (to span the sleeved area of the container), full-colour artwork with accurate sleeve net dimensions (flat width × cut length), whether a perforation is needed for tamper-evidence or easy-open, and required barcode position and ITF/EAN barcode specification. The sleeve flat width is calculated as: (container circumference at the sleeve's widest application point ÷ 2) + 5–8mm clearance. Are shrink sleeves compatible with recycling?
Recyclability of shrink-sleeved containers depends on the sleeve material and the sorting and recycling infrastructure of the destination market. PETG sleeves on PET bottles are compatible with most PET bottle recycling systems because PETG separates from PET in the float-sink stage (PETG sinks, PET floats). PVC sleeves are problematic on PET containers — even a small proportion of PVC contamination degrades recycled PET quality, and most EPR scheme guidelines recommend avoiding PVC sleeves on recyclable PET containers. In markets requiring How2Recycle labelling or compliance with RecyClass schemes (EU), confirm the sleeve-container combination before launch. Some packaging advisors now recommend cut-off perforations on shrink sleeves above the product fill level to allow easy consumer removal before recycling.
What is the difference between a full-body sleeve and a neck band?
A full-body shrink sleeve covers the majority of the container height from shoulder to base — providing full 360-degree print coverage across the entire container surface. A neck band (or tamper-evident band) is a narrow sleeve applied only around the cap or closure of a bottle to provide tamper evidence — the band is perforated and tears away when the cap is first opened. Many beverage and food containers use both: a full-body sleeve for branding and a separate tamper-evident neck band at the closure. Both can be supplied by the same manufacturer or specified separately.
What equipment is needed to apply shrink sleeves?
Shrink sleeve application requires an automatic sleeve applicator (which places the pre-cut or continuous roll sleeve over the container) followed by a shrink tunnel (steam tunnel or hot-air tunnel) that heats the sleeve to its shrink activation temperature. Steam tunnels are preferred for most applications because steam heat is more uniform and gentle than hot air — particularly for complex profiles or heat-sensitive containers.
