Sauce and condiment packaging spans a wide range of product viscosities (from thin hot sauce to thick paste), pH levels (from acidic vinegar-based sauces to neutral oil-based dressings), and thermal processes (from ambient cold-fill to high-temperature hot-fill pasteurisation). Material selection must account for all three factors. Glass bottles are the traditional and premium format for sauces and condiments — glass is inert, flavour-neutral, provides complete oxygen barrier, and is available in a wide range of bottle shapes for brand differentiation. Standard sauce bottle neck finishes for glass are 28mm T-finish (the standard for hot sauce, Worcestershire, and similar bottle formats), 38mm and 43mm wide-mouth finishes for thicker sauces. For acidic products (vinegar-based, tomato-based sauces with pH below 4.5), glass provides the best material compatibility — low-pH products can interact with metal closures and some plastic packaging at elevated temperatures or over extended shelf life. PET squeeze bottles are widely used for ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressings, and consumer-facing food service sauces — the squeezable format is convenient, dispensing without dripping. PET is compatible with most sauce formulations; for hot-fill application, hot-fill PET is required (see beverage bottle guidance). HDPE squeeze bottles provide better oxygen barrier than PET and are used for mayonnaise (oxygen-sensitive) and products requiring good squeezeability at cold temperatures. PP jars are used for chunky sauces, pastes, and condiments (hummus, harissa, pesto) where a wide mouth is needed for access. PP jar closures are typically linerless (the jar and lid geometry form the seal) or with a PE foam liner.
