A bucket elevator vertically elevates bulk granular, seed, or powder materials using a series of buckets attached to a belt or chain that runs vertically between a lower boot section and an upper head section. At the head, the buckets are inverted or centrifugally discharged; the material falls out of the bucket and into the discharge chute. Bucket elevators are the standard method for vertical elevation of grain, flour, milled products, spice seed, and other free-flowing bulk food materials in food mills and processing plants where a conveyor cannot be inclined steeply enough for the building layout. Food-grade bucket elevators must be constructed in stainless steel with food-grade plastic or stainless steel buckets; enclosed housing to prevent product contamination and dust escape; accessible inspection and cleanout doors at the boot; and properly tensioned belt to prevent slippage and belt fires in grain handling. Centrifugal discharge elevators (the standard type for grain and flour) discharge by centrifugal force at the head; continuous (gentle) elevators discharge over the head for fragile products.
