Filling technologies and container types
Filling technology selection is one of the most important decisions in beverage plant design. Gravity fillers are used for still, non-pressurised, low-viscosity beverages in PET bottles or glass. Isobaric (counter-pressure) fillers are required for carbonated beverages to prevent foam formation during filling. Aseptic fillers — which fill the product into pre-sterilised containers in a sterile environment — are required for UHT-treated beverages that need ambient shelf life without preservatives. Tetra Pak and similar carton-filling systems use their own proprietary aseptic format. Containers include PET bottles (blow-moulded on or off the filling line), glass bottles (more common in premium beverages), aluminium cans, and carton aseptic packs. Many modern high-speed lines integrate PET preform blow-moulding immediately before filling (blow-fill or blowroom integration) to eliminate container transport and storage costs.

What is the difference between hot-fill, cold-fill, and aseptic filling for juice?
Hot-fill fills the product into containers while it is still at pasteurisation temperature (typically 85–90°C), using the residual heat to sterilise the container interior. As the product cools after capping, a vacuum is created that seals the container. Hot-fill requires heat-resistant PET bottles with a reinforced shoulder and base. Cold-fill pasteurises the product and then cools it before filling in a clean (but not sterile) environment, typically with preservatives or low pH to inhibit spoilage. Aseptic filling sterilises the product by UHT processing, cools it, and fills into pre-sterilised containers in a sterile filling zone — no preservatives or refrigeration are required. Aseptic is the most capital-intensive but gives the longest ambient shelf life and preserves the freshest flavour profile.
Do I need reverse osmosis for water used in beverages?
Water treatment requirements depend on the source water quality and the beverage product. For premium still water, carbonated water, and most carbonated soft drinks, reverse osmosis (RO) is standard to achieve consistent mineral content and remove impurities that affect taste. For some beverages where mineral content is part of the product character (mineral water), RO is not appropriate. UV treatment and ozonation provide microbial disinfection but do not remove dissolved minerals or organics. A full water quality analysis from your source should be the starting point for specifying water treatment — ask potential suppliers to review your water analysis and recommend the appropriate treatment train for your product.
What is the typical line speed for a PET bottle filling line?
PET filling line speeds vary widely depending on the bottle size, filling technology, and level of automation. Entry-level lines for small producers may fill 1,000–3,000 bottles per hour for 500ml bottles. Mid-scale lines run at 5,000–15,000 BPH. High-speed industrial lines for major soft drink bottlers run at 30,000–60,000 BPH or above. Line speed should be sized to your annual production volume, production hours, planned stoppages, and maintenance downtime. Do not over-specify speed — high-speed lines require significantly more capital, higher technical maintenance capability, and more complex changeover procedures than mid-scale equivalents.
