Browse Can Seaming Machine Suppliers →Double-seam can seaming principle and applications
A can seaming machine (also called a can closer or double seamer) closes a filled can by mechanically joining the can body and lid (end) using a two-operation double-seam process. The double-seam process: the filled can is placed on the seaming machine; the lid is placed on top of the can body; in the first seaming operation, a seaming roll hooks the lid flange and the body flange together; in the second seaming operation, a tighter seaming roll irons and compresses the double-seam into a hermetic closure. A properly formed double seam provides an air-tight, liquid-tight, and vacuum-tight closure suitable for retort (high-temperature) sterilisation of food products. Can seaming machines are used for: food cans — vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, soups, sauces, pet food in tinplate cans; beverage cans — beer, CSD, energy drinks, sparkling water in aluminium cans (these use high-speed automatic seamers integrated into filling lines at thousands of cans per minute for industrial scale); paint and chemical cans — tinplate cans for paint, varnish, chemicals in 0.5L to 20L sizes; aerosol can seaming — crimping the seamer (bottom dome) onto the aerosol can body. Can diameters most commonly range from 52mm (small food or beverage cans) to 153mm (large catering cans). The can body diameter, lid diameter, and seaming roll profile must be matched precisely — they are not interchangeable between different can standards.
