Construction materials are heavy, bulky and costly to move, so the trade is more regional than most. Where a lighter product might be bought in Lagos and carried anywhere, a builder in Abuja, Port Harcourt or Kano will usually buy cement, sand, blocks, steel and timber close to the site, and travel only for high-value finishing items.
The supply chain differs by product. Cement, reinforcement steel, roofing sheets, paints, pipes and cables are largely made in Nigeria, and manufacturers sell through appointed distributors. Tiles are both made locally and imported. Sanitary ware, taps, door hardware, lighting and many electrical accessories are mostly imported, largely from China, and reach the market through importers based mainly in Lagos.
