Beverage bottles are the dominant consumer packaging format for water, carbonated soft drinks, juice, sports drinks, tea, coffee, and other liquid beverages. The material choice is primarily driven by the product type, carbonation level, shelf life requirement, and brand positioning. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are the global standard for most non-glass beverage categories — produced by blow-moulding from injection-moulded preforms. PET is lightweight, shatterproof, transparent, and cost-effective. For carbonated beverages (CSDs, sparkling water), PET provides adequate CO₂ barrier at standard wall thicknesses. For oxygen-sensitive beverages (juices, teas, sports drinks with nutrient retention requirements), PET's oxygen permeability may limit shelf life — oxygen barrier enhancement options include OXBAR (oxygen-scavenging PET resin additive), multilayer barrier coating (plasma SiOx or BAIROCX coatings applied to the inner bottle surface), or actively scavenging caps. Glass bottles are used for premium beverages — beer, sparkling water, kombucha, premium juice, and spirits. Preform supply, hot-fill vs cold-fill, and ordering guidance
Most PET beverage bottles used by beverage manufacturers are produced on-site using a stretch-blow-moulding (SBM) machine that takes injection-moulded PET preforms and blows them into finished bottles. The preform is the intermediate form — a test-tube-shaped piece of PET that contains exactly the right amount of PET resin for the finished bottle, with the neck finish already moulded. When sourcing PET beverage bottles, you have three main options: purchase finished blown bottles from a converter (most practical for small and medium beverage brands without on-site blow-moulding capability); purchase PET preforms and blow bottles on your own SBM machine (for larger-volume producers); or purchase PET resin and inject and blow on your own equipment. Hot-fill vs cold-fill is a critical specification: hot-fill PET bottles are designed to withstand filling temperatures of up to 88–92°C for hot-fill pasteurisation without the bottle deforming — they use a heat-set PET and have vacuum-panel features in the bottle design to accommodate the vacuum formed as the product cools. Cold-fill PET bottles are for ambient or cold-fill application — lighter wall, lower cost, but not suitable for hot-fill. Aseptic fill uses cold-fill bottles with in-line aseptic filling equipment. What is the most common PET water bottle standard?
For still water, the most common formats are 330mL, 500mL, 750mL, and 1.5L PET bottles with a PCO 1881 28mm neck finish. 500mL is the dominant single-serve still water format globally. For sparkling water, the same neck standard is used but with a thicker-wall, pressure-rated PET designed for carbonation. The bottle shape and label area are the primary brand differentiation tools — most consumer water brands use a custom-shaped bottle mould that defines the brand identity on shelf. For own-label or private-label water, standard stock bottle shapes are available from PET bottle suppliers without custom mould cost.
What PET bottle barrier is needed for orange juice shelf life?
Fresh orange juice (not-from-concentrate, HPP, or pasteurised juice) has high oxygen sensitivity — even small oxygen ingress into the bottle can cause rapid flavour deterioration and nutrient (vitamin C) loss. Standard PET provides insufficient oxygen barrier for extended ambient shelf life of orange juice. Can I use recycled PET (rPET) in beverage bottles?
Yes — food-grade recycled PET (rPET) produced from post-consumer PET bottle recyclate through a certified food-contact-safe decontamination process can be used in beverage bottles. In the EU, food-grade rPET for beverage bottles must come from recycling processes authorised under EU Regulation 282/2008 (or the current applicable EU recycled plastic regulation). In the US, FDA issues No Objection Letters (NOLs) for specific rPET recycling processes for food contact use. rPET for beverage bottles is produced from sorted, cleaned, and decontaminated post-consumer PET bottle flakes.
