Cotton Fabric Types and Construction

Plain weave: balanced, durable — poplin, lawn, muslin, percale, voile. Twill weave: diagonal rib — denim (3/1 twill), chino, gabardine, drill. Satin weave: smooth face — sateen, silk-cotton blends for luxury shirting. Terry weave: looped pile — towelling, bathrobes, face cloths. Knitted: single-jersey (T-shirts), piqué (polo shirts), interlock (babywear, underwear), French terry (sweatshirts). Specification: yarn count (Ne), weave, weight (GSM), width (typically 110–300 cm).

Cotton Grades: Pima, Upland, Giza, and BCI

Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum): 90% of global cotton; fibre length 25–32 mm; broad range of fabrics from workwear to mid-range shirting. Pima cotton (G. barbadense, US and Peru): extra-long staple 34–38 mm; premium softness and strength; priced 50–100% above Upland. Giza cotton (Egypt, G. barbadense): staple 34–41 mm; finest lustre; limited supply commands luxury premiums. BCI (Better Cotton): sustainability standard covering water reduction, pesticide reduction, and fair labour — does not certify organic but improves supply chain practices; covers ~20% of global cotton production.

GOTS and OEKO-TEX Certification for Cotton Fabric

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): requires certified organic fibre (USDA NOP, EU Regulation 848/2018, or equivalent) AND processing under GOTS-licensed facility — covering dye inputs, finishing chemicals, wastewater, and social criteria. A GOTS transaction certificate (TC) must be issued for each B2B shipment. OEKO-TEX Standard 100: tests the finished article for >100 harmful substances (pH, formaldehyde, pesticides, heavy metals, AZO dyes) — does not certify organic but validates chemical safety. Both certifications can be requested simultaneously.
