How VFFS machines work and what they produce

What is the difference between a fin seal and a lap seal on a VFFS machine?

In a lap seal, one film edge overlaps the other and the inside surface of one edge is sealed to the outside surface of the other, creating a flat profile. Can a VFFS machine produce stand-up pouches?
