ROPP capping principle and applications
A ROPP (roll-on pilfer-proof) capping machine applies an aluminium sleeve cap to a bottle by using a set of rollers to form and thread the cap onto the bottle neck. The ROPP process: a plain aluminium sleeve (the pre-cap, supplied as a straight-sided tube without threads) is placed over the bottle neck; the ROPP capping head descends over the cap; forming rollers compress the top disc of the cap down onto the neck finish; threading rollers form thread impressions in the cap wall to match the bottle neck thread; a tamper-evidence roller forms the pilfer-proof band below the neck ring — creating perforations or a break line that separates when the cap is first opened. The result is a tamper-evident threaded aluminium closure that is formed in place on the bottle — providing a clean, premium appearance with no visible seam. ROPP closures are the standard for: wine and sparkling wine (replacing cork in many markets, particularly for entry and mid-tier wines); spirits (whisky, vodka, gin, rum — ROPP in 28mm BVS, 28mm DIAM, and 30mm formats); olive oil and gourmet oils (glass bottles with ROPP for premium retail and export); cider and perry; non-alcoholic beverages in glass bottles. ROPP closures are not suitable for carbonated beverages unless specifically designed for pressure — the foil cap does not seal against internal CO₂ pressure in the same way as a crown cap or a pressure-rated PET screw cap.
