PCB types and manufacturing capabilities overview
Printed circuit boards are manufactured in a broad range of types to serve different electronic application requirements: single-layer PCBs (simplest construction, one copper layer on FR4 substrate — used in simple consumer electronics, LED lighting, power supplies); double-layer PCBs (two copper layers, through-hole vias — the most common construction for standard electronics); multilayer PCBs (4, 6, 8, 10, 12+ copper layers, buried and blind vias — used in complex computing, industrial, and telecommunications equipment); HDI (High Density Interconnect) PCBs (microvias, laser drilling, fine-line trace/space — required for smartphones, tablets, and wearables where board real estate is limited); flexible PCBs (flexible polyimide substrate, FPC/flex circuits — used for dynamic flexing applications in portable electronics and automotive); rigid-flex PCBs (combined rigid and flexible sections in a single board — used for aerospace, medical implants, and complex 3D assemblies); and metal-core PCBs (MCPCB/aluminium-backed, copper-core — used for high-thermal-dissipation LED and power electronics applications). IPC standards govern PCB quality: IPC-A-600 (Acceptability of Printed Boards) defines cosmetic and dimensional acceptance criteria; IPC-6012 (Qualification and Performance Specification for Rigid PCBs) defines reliability and performance requirements; and IPC-6013 covers flexible and rigid-flex PCBs. IPC Class 2 is the standard for most consumer and industrial electronics; IPC Class 3 applies to high-reliability military, medical, and aerospace applications.
