Authorised distribution vs open market: counterfeit risk
Semiconductor procurement operates across two fundamentally different channels with very different risk profiles. Authorised distribution (franchised distribution) means sourcing directly from the semiconductor manufacturer or through distributors officially authorised by the manufacturer — Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Digi-Key, Mouser Electronics, TTI, and Future Electronics are the world's leading authorised electronics distributors. Authorised distributors receive components directly from the manufacturer, in original factory packaging, with full chain-of-custody documentation. Counterfeit risk in authorised channels is extremely low. The open market (independent distribution, spot market) encompasses non-franchised distributors buying and selling excess inventory, obsolete components, and hard-to-find parts. While legitimate independent distributors serve important supply chain functions, the open market is where the majority of counterfeit semiconductor incidents occur — particularly for high-value, allocated, or discontinued ICs. For buyers purchasing outside authorised channels, AS6081 (IDEA counterfeit avoidance standard), IDEA-STD-1010 (inspection procedures), and third-party inspection (X-ray, decap, parametric testing) are critical risk mitigation tools. For high-stakes applications (automotive, medical, aerospace), sourcing exclusively from authorised distributors is strongly recommended.
