Food grade screw conveyors — types and applications
A screw conveyor (auger conveyor) moves bulk granular, powder, or semi-solid material by the rotation of a helical screw (auger) inside a trough or enclosed tube. As the screw rotates, the helix pushes the material along the conveyor in the direction of the screw rotation. Screw conveyors are used extensively in food processing for: flour and grain handling between storage, sifting, and milling stages; powder and spice transfer from silos to mixing machines; conveying salt, sugar, and other bulk dry ingredients in food production; and horizontal or moderately inclined transfer of bulk food materials where pneumatic conveying would damage the product or is not suitable. For wet, sticky, or hygroscopic products, more frequent and thorough cleaning is required — the screw and trough must be accessible for cleaning; enclosed tube screw conveyors are more difficult to clean than open trough types. For allergen-containing ingredients (wheat flour, nut powders, etc.), the cleaning procedure must be validated to demonstrate effective allergen removal, and allergen swab testing should be carried out at the cleaning validation frequency.
