Beverage categories and their processing requirements
Beverage manufacturing covers several distinct product types, each requiring a different machinery configuration. Fruit juice production uses washing and sorting of fresh fruit, pressing or pulping, enzymatic treatment, pasteurisation, and filling — in hot-fill, cold-fill, or aseptic format depending on the target shelf life and distribution channel. Carbonated soft drinks (CSDs) are produced by blending syrup with treated water, carbonating the blend, and filling isobarically into containers under counter-pressure to retain CO₂. Still water and flavoured water lines require water treatment (filtration, UV treatment, ozonation, or reverse osmosis) and filling without carbonation. Energy drinks, ready-to-drink teas, and dairy-based beverages each require specific mixing, thermal treatment, and aseptic filling solutions. The choice of filling technology — gravity filler, isobaric filler, piston filler, or aseptic filler — depends on the product type, the container type, and the required shelf life.
Filling technologies and container types
Filling technology selection is one of the most important decisions in beverage plant design. Gravity fillers are used for still, non-pressurised, low-viscosity beverages in PET bottles or glass. Isobaric (counter-pressure) fillers are required for carbonated beverages to prevent foam formation during filling. Aseptic fillers — which fill the product into pre-sterilised containers in a sterile environment — are required for UHT-treated beverages that need ambient shelf life without preservatives. Tetra Pak and similar carton-filling systems use their own proprietary aseptic format. Containers include PET bottles (blow-moulded on or off the filling line), glass bottles (more common in premium beverages), aluminium cans, and carton aseptic packs. Many modern high-speed lines integrate PET preform blow-moulding immediately before filling (blow-fill or blowroom integration) to eliminate container transport and storage costs.
