Horizontal vs vertical cartoners and closure methods
A cartoning machine (or cartoner) erects flat-blanked cartons from a magazine, loads them with product, and closes and seals the end flaps — producing the familiar retail and secondary carton. Cartoning machines are a key stage in most consumer goods packaging lines, placing primary-packed products (bottles, jars, pouches, sachets, blister packs) into cartons for retail shelf or wholesale distribution. Horizontal cartoners: the carton is erected and travels horizontally; product is loaded from the end (end-load) into the horizontal carton cavity; the most common configuration for regular solid products (bottles, jars, tubes, sachets, bagged products); suitable for a very wide range of product sizes and carton formats; high-speed horizontal cartoners run at 100–500+ cartons per minute. End-load horizontal cartoners: the carton is erected with the major end flap(s) open; the product(s) are pushed or placed into the carton from the open end; the major end flaps are folded and closed by tuck-in or hot-melt glue. Top-load horizontal cartoners (also called case packers for cartons): product is loaded into the carton from the top; used for bagged products, pouches, or stacked items. Vertical cartoners: the carton stands upright (major flaps on top); product is loaded from the top; used for irregular products, bundles, and mixed products loaded by hand or robot; lower speed than horizontal but flexible for difficult products. Closure methods: tuck-in closure — the end flaps of the carton are folded and interlocked by a tucking mechanism; no adhesive required; tamper-evident tuck closure variants are available; suitable for most food and consumer goods applications. Hot-melt glue closure — a bead of hot-melt adhesive is applied to the end flaps before folding; produces a stronger, more secure closure than tuck-in; required for pharmaceuticals (tamper evidence), products in hot or humid environments, and cartons with a high aspect ratio. Combination (tuck + glue) — tuck-in with an additional glue bead; provides maximum security. Leaflet insertion: pharmaceutical and food supplement cartoners typically include a leaflet (package insert) folder and inserter station, which folds the printed insert and places it into the carton before the end is closed.
