PLA grades and their applications
PLA is available in several grades differentiated by D-isomer content, which governs crystallinity, heat resistance, and mechanical properties. Standard PLLA (high L-isomer, low D-content, below 2% D): semi-crystalline, higher heat resistance than amorphous PLA, suitable for thermoformed trays, injection-moulded rigid packaging, and technical applications. Amorphous PLA (higher D-content, above 8% D): transparent, lower heat resistance, faster crystallisation with nucleating agents — used for clear cold cups, film, and window film for packaging. Heat-resistant PLA (typically PLLA with crystallisation-enhancing nucleating agent and fill): suitable for hot-fill containers and food service applications up to approximately 80–85°C. Standard PLA without heat treatment has a heat deflection temperature (HDT) of only 50–60°C — not suitable for hot beverages or hot-fill applications without modification. For injection-moulded disposable cutlery, standard extrusion-grade PLA (MFI 5–20 g/10 min at 190°C/2.16kg) is the primary specification. For blown film, a lower MFI grade (2–5 g/10 min) with adequate melt strength is required. NatureWorks (US) and Total Corbion (Netherlands) are the dominant producers; Chinese producers including Haizheng Biomaterials are growing in volume.
