Food & Beverages Sourcing Guide

Commodity ingredients in bulk: typically sold by the metric tonne (MT) — minimum 1–5 MT for most agricultural commodities. Packaged retail-ready food products: 50–500 cases per SKU from most manufacturers. Beverages (bottled): 200–500 cases (24-unit) per SKU. Custom-recipe or private label products: typically 500–2,000 units minimum per SKU to justify production setup costs.

UK food imports require pre-notification via IPAFFS (Import of products, animals, food and feed system). EU imports via TRACES NT. Both require phytosanitary certificates for plant-based products and veterinary certificates for animal products. Suppliers must hold relevant food safety certifications — BRC Global Standards and FSSC 22000 are the most recognised internationally. Halal certification (from accredited bodies) is required for sales in Muslim-majority markets. Organic products need equivalent EU or UK organic certification from the supplier's country.

Bulk agricultural commodities ship in containers (FCL/LCL): 20–35 days from Asia, 18–25 days from Africa. Temperature-sensitive products (dairy, meat, fresh produce) require refrigerated containers (reefer) or insulated boxes with gel packs for air freight. Dry ambient food products are straightforward to ship. Ensure your freight forwarder is experienced in food commodity shipping — customs pre-notification timing is critical.

Always request Certificates of Analysis (COA) confirming key quality parameters (moisture, aflatoxin, pesticide residues) before paying. For agricultural commodities, build in pre-shipment inspection by a third-party (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek) covering weight verification and quality grading. Check that your supplier's HACCP system is current and that they understand your destination market's labelling requirements before production.
