PP homopolymer vs copolymer — which grade for injection moulding?
Polypropylene for injection moulding is available in two main structural types. PP homopolymer (PPH) is the standard general-purpose injection moulding grade — high stiffness, good surface finish, cost-effective, and suitable for rigid packaging, caps and closures, crates, and non-impact-critical structural parts. It has lower impact resistance, particularly at low temperatures. PP random copolymer (PPRC) incorporates a small percentage of ethylene comonomers to improve clarity and reduce the melting point — used for food containers, medical packaging, and applications where transparency or sterilisability (autoclave) is needed. PP block copolymer (PPBC or impact copolymer) has rubber domains dispersed in the PP matrix to deliver high impact resistance at low temperatures — used for automotive bumpers, industrial crates, tool boxes, and outdoor products. The MFI range for injection moulding PP is typically 3–60 g/10 min (measured at 230°C/2.16 kg per ASTM D1238 or ISO 1133). General-purpose moulding: 8–25 g/10 min. Thin-wall, high-speed moulding: 25–60 g/10 min. Heavy-wall parts: 3–10 g/10 min. Confirm the correct MFI range with your machine manufacturer before specifying a resin grade.
Certifications and documentation to request
For B2B PP granule procurement, request the following from every potential supplier: Certificate of Analysis (CoA) confirming MFI, density, flexural modulus, impact strength (Charpy or Izod), and ash content; REACH compliance declaration confirming absence of SVHCs above 0.1% w/w; food contact Declaration of Compliance where the moulded product will contact food (EU Regulation 10/2011 for EU buyers; FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for US buyers); ISO 9001 certificate for the production facility; and Certificate of Origin. For natural (uncoloured, undyed) grades, request confirmation that the resin contains no recycled content unless recycled content is explicitly required. For halogen-free and RoHS-compliant applications, request written confirmation. Pre-shipment SGS or Intertek inspection is advisable for new supplier relationships and large orders.
MOQ, packaging, and supplier comparison
Most PP granule suppliers for injection moulding quote in metric tonnes. Typical MOQ for a direct factory order is one FCL — a 20ft container holds approximately 20–24 metric tonnes of PP granules in 25kg bags. Some trading companies supply LCL orders (1–5 tonnes) at a premium. Big-bag (FIBC/jumbo bag, 500–1,000kg) packaging is available and preferred for automated handling. Standard 25kg woven PP bags with inner PE liner are the most common export format. When comparing suppliers, compare total landed cost (CIF or CFR to your port), not just ex-works pricing. Factor in freight, customs duty, inland delivery, and any inspection or laboratory testing costs. Request samples (typically 2–5kg) before committing to a container order. China (Sinopec, PetroChina downstream compounds, and trading companies) and the Middle East (SABIC, Borouge) are the dominant PP export origins.

What MFI should I specify for PP granules for general injection moulding?
For general-purpose injection moulding of consumer products (containers, caps, housewares), an MFI of 8–20 g/10 min (230°C/2.16kg) is suitable for most standard wall thicknesses (2–3mm). For thin-wall packaging (wall thickness below 1.5mm), specify 25–60 g/10 min. For thick-wall structural parts (wall thickness above 4mm), specify 3–8 g/10 min for better control and reduced sink marks. Always confirm the MFI range appropriate for your specific tool and machine with your toolmaker or machine supplier.
Can PP granules for injection moulding be used for food-contact products?
Yes — polypropylene is widely approved for food contact applications. For food-contact moulded products, specify a food-contact grade PP and request the supplier's Declaration of Compliance confirming compliance with EU Regulation 10/2011 (for EU markets) or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 (for US markets). The declaration should confirm that the resin contains no restricted additives or colorants in excess of permitted migration limits. Verify that any masterbatch colorants used in moulding also have food-contact approval.
What is the typical lead time for a container order of PP granules from China?
For standard grades held in stock by a trading company or regional warehouse, lead time from order confirmation to vessel loading is typically 5–15 days. For manufacturer direct orders requiring production scheduling, lead time may extend to 3–6 weeks. Ocean freight from Chinese ports to Europe is typically 25–35 days; to West Africa 20–30 days; to the US East Coast 28–40 days. Confirm current schedules with your freight forwarder at the time of order.
What is the difference between natural, black, and coloured PP granules?
Natural (or white) PP granules contain no colourant and are the base grade used for dyeing or where the natural milky-white colour is acceptable. Black PP granules contain carbon black masterbatch pre-compounded into the resin — used for parts requiring UV resistance (outdoor applications) or where colour consistency is critical. Coloured PP granules contain pre-compounded pigment — typically used for high-volume production where colour consistency across batches is required. For small-volume colour production, buying natural granules and adding colour masterbatch at the moulding machine is more flexible. Confirm that colorants comply with applicable regulations for your end application.
